Towards Realizing an Ultra-large Capacity and Power Saving Photonic Network

The Internet has become an indispensible part of today’s life. It was realized thanks to the development of the optical communication technology, which allowed a dramatic reduction of the communication cost both per bit and distance. To support the next generation network and the advent of a ubiquitous environment, advanced infrastructures are required, such as: transmission system with higher efficiency and larger capacity; communication nodes with lower power consumption and improved throughput; and speed-up of the access and local area network. In accordance with these challenges, our laboratory, going by the slogan "Connect the World through Light," is implementing researches on: ultra-fast, small, and power saving photonic switch; ultra-fast optical signal processing circuit; and advanced network systems, etc.
